BEGINNING HARMONICA WORKSHOP

  • What is a diatonic Harmonica?
  • What styles of music can be played on the Diatonic Harmonica?
  • Why are there so many “keys” of diatonic harmonicas?
  • What will I learn at the beginning harmonica workshop?
  • I don’t have a harmonica. What kind should I buy?

The most common diatonic harmonica has ten holes for a total of 20 “Natural” notes. Almost any style of music can be played on this instrument through the use of positions, draw bends, blow bends, overblows, and overdraws.

This is a basic harmonica workshop. We will work with 1st and second positions to show you how to play with others in a manner that is pleasing to the ears, and teach you the do’s and don’ts about playing with others.

  • Bluegrass
  • Blues
  • Folk
  • Country
  • Rock
  • Heavy Metal
  • Jazz
  • Reggae
  • and more…

Because the diatonic harmonica has a fixed range of notes that only correspond to the key that a song is played in, a person that wishes to have a harmonica for every key would have to own 12 harmonicas. In the real world this translates to 4 or 5 keys. If someone calls Ab in a jam session, they are what musicians call a “jam buster”. They just want to show off! Let them play their song and jump in on the next one…

For this workshop you only need to have a “C” harmonica.
This will allow you to play in the keys of “C” and “G”
When you become comfortable enough on the instrument to play with others, you will need to add other keys…

  • Correct breathing techniques
  • How to hold the harmonica
  • Playing single notes and chords
  • Playing 1st and second position scales
  • “Riffs” on the harmonica
  • “Train sounds” for 1st & 2nd position
  • And the “Good Morning” riff!

We will be offering Bushman “Blue Steel” 10-hole diatonic harmonicas for $6.00 each!
